Big Fish

Sky Mobile

We had a tremendous amount of fun working with the very talented teams at Engine and Iconoclast to bring together this brilliant spot for Sky Mobile.

Creative Director, Phil Oldham wrote, “Sky Mobile “Big Fish” has a slapstick, physical humour that is complemented perfectly by the VFX. Absolute created a larger than life, comedy tuna in CGI to replace the latex model shot practically on location, just outside of Cape Town. We also had the task of balancing realism with a sense of playfulness which meant removing the physical real-life razor fins to achieve the desired on- screen aesthetic.

2D Artist Scott Simmonds and CG artist Sersha Lawrence did a fantastic job of creating the metallic qualities that the yellow fin has. Saying that, I think we can all agree that the real star was the young actor Sienna, who had to catch the rather heavy latex prop over and over in somewhat choppy conditions.”

CG Artist Sersha said “Within the boundaries of the deadline, there were many challenges building the fish. The approach to mix the shot prop and CG asset meant pushing to learn new techniques and processes to create the elements of realism it needed. A slight flap in the fin; a ruffle of wind through the dorsal. These were small but necessary factors that helped bring the tuna to life.
